The Angelic Warfare Confraternity App

The Angelic Warfare Confraternity is an official apostolate of the Dominican Order under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas. The fellowship of men and women bound to each other in this confraternity is dedicated to pursuing the virtue of chastity as well as praying for the promotion of chastity throughout the world.

One doesn’t need to be part of a religious order to join the confraternity, nor does one need to officially enroll to participate in the prayers and devotions. The prayers and promises of the confraternity help strengthen the resistance against the sins of the flesh, building the virtue of chastity in each of its members. Moreover, through the specific prayers, the confraternity is dedicated to promoting chastity in a world marked by the sins of the flesh.

History of the Angelic Warfare Confraternity

The confraternity was officially established in the middle of the 17th century, but the devotion to St. Thomas Aquinas and living a chaste life of purity began much earlier, soon after the death of the great saint. When a relic of St. Thomas Aquinas was made available for public veneration, people came from all over to pray for purity in front of this relic, which was known as the cord of purity.

St. Thomas is known as the great patron of chastity and purity because he resisted sexual temptation so remarkably throughout his life. According to canonization records, the cord of purity was bestowed upon him during a mystical vision where two angels visited him. During this visit, the angels gave him the cord, which conferred upon him the special grace of chastity.

After the Angelic Doctor’s death, pilgrims would make the journey to see the relic of the purity cord. They would touch their own cords to it in the hopes that it would aid them in pursuing purity. This tradition became more organized over the years and was finally established as an official confraternity by Fr. Francis Duerwerders in Belgium.

St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of chastity and the Angelic Warfare Confraternity.

By enrolling in the confraternity and faithfully practicing the devotions, you will receive strength in the virtue of chastity as well as healing and liberation on the long hard road of living a life of purity. The Church has also conferred a plenary indulgence to eligible members.

Through the daily prayers said for each other, each member receives strength in the struggle against sexual temptation and the sins against chastity.
